FYI, the campus network administrators have had to block pings from off campus due to some denial-of-service attacks in May. Since the Mt Graham network is technically "off campus", pings from/to there are mainly blocked. So if you're wondering if the network or a particular machine is down, ping probably won't tell you much. But since I have scripts that use ping to document network outages, I got the administrators to make exceptions for those machines that run the scripts (gaffel and frankenheim). Frankenheim is allowed to ping gaffel and gaffel is allowed to ping any machine on Mt Graham. If you want to see the latest ping results from these scripts, do tail /net/gaffel/gdisk/peters/netcheck.stat tail /net/frankenheim/dka100/peters/netcheck.stat The beginning of these files (which are purged monthly), give an explanation and column headings. To see this, do "head" instead of "tail".
