RECYCLING THE 4 COLOR BOLOMETER: February 19 1998 1>> Goto the compressor loft and close the vacuum pump main valve. 2>> In the rx room close off the black handled valve on the ceiling to the vacuum line.(Closed is where the line on the valve is up and down). 3>> Connect the He gas, with low pressure, to the nipple on the ceiling by the yellow valve to the vacuum system. 4>> Slowly open the yellow valve to put the bolometer under positive pressure. This will give a gauge reading of about 900 mbar on the ceiling gauge and about 800 mbar on the red gauge by the door to the right rx room. 5>> Close the yellow valve at the vacuum manifold. 6>> Now it is safe to remove the pumping adaptor on the top of the bolometer, to the He fill tube opening. 7>> After removing the adaptor, open the black valve on the ceiling slowly to allow it to reach atmosphere pressure. 8>> Make a He transfer. The bolometer is filled when the plume gets violent. 9>> Replace the pumping adaptor to the bolometer. 10>> Goto the loft and open the bypass valve(the smaller valve handle) 4 turns counterclockwise. 11>> Pump and monitor for about 1.5hrs. or until the read gauge reads about 50 mbar.. This is about the 2:00 position on the gauge. ** Steps 12 and 13 can be omitted, because below 50mbar He is a superfluid and it doesn't matter how fast it is pumped on. The reason for pumping slowly at the beginning is to make sure that one doesn't boil off all the He. 12>> Goto the loft and fully open the bypass valve. 13>> Pump and monitor for about another 1.5hrs or until the gauge reads about 12 mbar.. This is about the 10:00 position on the gauge. 14>> Goto loft and open the main valve and close the bypass valve. 15>> Continue to pump until the pressure gets to below 1 mbar (about 0.7). This will take about 45 minutes. By getting the pressure as low as possible will maximize the fraction of He3 liquid, before using the sorption heater. 16>> Connect the 9 pin connector to the top of the bolometer, a multimeter to the yellow leads, and the red leads, labeled "Sorb Heater" to the 18VDC power supply on the table. 17>> Heat the sorption pump until a resistance of 2.5 kOhm is reached. This takes about 5 minutes. 18>> The bolometer will stablize in about 40 minutes after heating. GENERAL: Cables: fill nitrogen every 24hrs. RED......sorption pump heater. holdtime He4 is 48hrs. YELLOW...sorption pump thermometer. BLACK....He4 thermometer. BLUE.....He3 thermometer. SETTINGS: Bias[mV] x[mm] f[mm] Id (hor.) (vert.)
